Presentation Title: Immigrant Integration in the Central Valley: New Data, New Challenges

Description: Professor Pastor will present recent data on the state of immigrant integration in the Central Valley and will highlight some of the difficult challenges that have been posed by the past year of public health and economic crises. While there is some hope of change with a new administration in Washington, there are significant challenges to securing an inclusive immigration reform and bettering immigrant lives in California. Concerted community organizing and alliance-building will remain central to shifting the calculus in favor of a broad multi-sector commitment to immigrant integration. About Manuel Pastor: Dr. Manuel Pastor is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California where he currently directs the Equity Research Institute at USC, a research center whose slogan is “Data and Analysis to Power Social Change.” Pastor’s research has generally focused on issues of the economic, environmental and social conditions facing low-income urban communities – and the social movements seeking to change those realities. His latest book, State of Resistance: What California's Dizzying Descent and Remarkable Resurgence Means for America's Future, came out in 2018 and was lauded in a New York Times review as “concise, clear and convincing.” 2021 will see the publication of two new books, South Central Dreams: Finding Home and Building Community in South L.A. (co-authored with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo) and Solidarity Economics: Why Mutuality and Movements Matter (co-authored with Chris Benner).
